“The New Droid Friends”

The droid workshop

The Jedi younglings Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, and Nubs sit around a table at Dotti’s Droid Workshop. Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna had sent them there to learn how to care for droids. Solay is having fun, but Brighstar is struggling with toggling a part. He enlists Nubs’s help,p but the two accidentally break the object. Nubs falls backward, and a female droid named Dotti helps him to his feet, explaining that repairing and building droids can be challenging.

Dotti then shifts the lesson toward “droid care” and explains that her workshop is designed to care for and repair droids. She introduces them to a yellow, cylindrical, two-legged droid named JN-47, whose vocabulator has been damaged beyond repair. Dotti explains that she has found a vocabulator that would fit JN-47 and begins to explain. Unknown to the four, they are being watched by two spider droids hanging from the ceiling.

The vocabulator heist

Spotting the vocabulator, they ride a conveyor belt and jump onto the bench. One of the droids grabs the vocabulator and climbs up a wall. Dotti explains the procedure to JN-47 before commencing the operation. However, she discovers the vocabulator is missing. Solay spots the two thieving spider droids, with one carrying the vocabulator. Brightstar leads the younglings after the thieves while Dotti reassures JN-47.

The Jedi younglings pursue the spider droids through the streets of Kublop Springs, with Brightstar using his Force powers to jump over roofs. Solay pursues the droids on the grounds and uses a Grappling hook to jump onto a wooden balcony. The droid jumps, and Nubs continues the pursuit. Before he can grab the spider droid, a second spider droid jumps on him and tickles his belly. The two spider droids retreat to Hap’s Sap Tap.

Inside the restaurant, Hap is stacking several cups as a band of alien musicians plays. One of the spider droids causes the cups to topple. When the Jedi spot them, they jump onto the stage and knock over the stands before leaping onto separate tables. One of the droids squirts some juice into Hap’s face. After evading Nubs, the droids flee the restaurant. When Hap asks what is going on, Solay explains that the spider droids stole something from Dotti’s workshop. A Rodian customer suggests that the Jedi follow the trail of purple, juicy footprints left by the spider droids. Hap says he and his customers will clean the store.

New droid friends

Following the trail of purple footprints, the Jedi younglings discover a large starship parked at the edge of the forest. They see a green and white astromech droid named Dozer and a yellow and white astromech droid named Gigi remonstrating with a tall, armored security droid. They tell the droid that they do not want to help Rek Minuu because they have learnt that he steals things. Before the security droid can rough up the two smaller droids, Solay and Brightstar confront the security droid and tell him to stop bullying the smaller droids.

The security droid orders them to leave before attacking them with two electrobatons. The Jedi block his attack with their training lightsabers. Dozer and Gigi decide to help the Jedi younglings. Dozer bumps into the security droid, knocking him face-first into the ground. Gigi’s drone detaches from his head and then switches off the security droid’s rear power button. Dozer and Gigi introduce themselves to the Jedi younglings, who return the favor.

Solay explains that they are looking for two spider droids who stole a vocabulator from Dotti. Dozer explains that Rek built and owns the spider droids. When Solay asks if he built them as well, Dozer explains that Rek only upgraded Dozer and Gigi, making Dozer strong and giving Gigi a flying drone. Dozer explains that he and Gigi learnt that Minuu has been stealing, which they regard as morally wrong. Dozer says that Rek has been wanting to upgrade their friend Beepers. Solay deduces that this is why Minuu stole the vocabulator.

The unscrupulous droid-builder

The Jedi and two astromechs agree to confront Rek about his delinquent behaviour. The two astromechs lead the Jedi into Minuu’s large workshop, where they find a green, orange, and white astromech droid named Beepers. Gigi’s drone powers on the hibernating Beepers while the Jedi locate the stolen vocabulator. Brightstar introduces himself and his friends to Beepers and promises to get him out. Before they can leave, they are confronted by Rek Minuu himself, who emerges from a ceiling hatch with the two spider droids.

He asks Dozer and Gigi why they are not doing their chores. Dozer tells Rek that he and his droid friends are leaving because they have learnt that Rek is a thief. Rek descends a pole and attempts to convince Dozer and Gigi to stay by promising upgrades that will make them better. Brightstar confronts Minuu over the stolen vocabulator. Rek replies that he needs it and claims to be the greatest droid-builder in the galaxy. He says that he will do what it takes to get what he wants.

When Solay counters that he is stealing, Minuu counters that it is for a good cause and asks if Beepers agree. Beeper voices his concerns in Binary, with his voice echoing due to his faulty vocabulator. Rek is sad that Beeper does not approve of his actions and permits him to leave. However, he insists on keeping the stolen vocabulator and flicks his finger, activating two stationary blue security droids armed with electro-batons. He orders his security droids to keep the vocabulator safe and to expel the intruders. The spider droids join in.

Brightstar tasks Nubs with retrieving the vocabulator while he and Solay duel with the security droids. When a security droid corners Nubs, Dozer knocks a stack of boxes into the droid. Dozer compliments Nubs, saying they make a great team. Rek grumbles while Gigi’s drone lures the spider droid inside a safe and locks it there. Solay cheers on the others, but Brightstar is still preoccupied with the towering security droid. Beepers activates his rocket booster and flies onto the security droid. He slams the security droid to the ground, allowing Brightstar to switch it off.

Rek surmises that his droid friends were not as strong as he thought and suggests they need new upgrades. Brightstar tells Rek that they are leaving with the stolen part. Rek allows them to leave but reminds the three astromech droids, Gigi, Beeper, and Dozer, that he made them better. Rek and the remaining spider droid head down to make repairs and upgrades on the damaged droids below.

A new home and family

Back at Dotti’s workshop, Dotti thanks the Jedi younglings for retrieving JN-47’s vocabulator and installs it into the droid. The droid begins chirping happily in Binary. Dotti then turns her attention to Beepers’ damaged vocabulator, commenting that the droid’s parts date back to the Old Republic. She operates on Beepers’ vocabulator and restores it to an operational state. While the droid beeps in delight, Dotti welcomes Dozer, Gigi, and Beepers to live and work at her workshop.

Recognizing the droids as special, she assigns them as companions to the Jedi younglings. Nubs is lauded with Dozer, Beepers with Brightstar, and Solay with Gigi. She assigns the three tounglings a “tune-up” using the lessons they learned at her workshop.

“Batuu Bonanza”

Mission to Batuu

The Jedi younglings Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, and Nubs travel to Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu with their new astromech droids Dozer, Gigi, and Beepers on a mission to deliver a package to Jedi Master Carver Drow. The three droids are curious and excited about their surroundings. Dozer accidentally knocks over a bowl of fruit, unsettling a Mon Calamari merchant.

Gigi startles a human girl and a human male vendor by detaching his drone and toppling some containers. Dozer runs circles around a labor droid, causing it to go dizzy. Brightstar remarks that the droids are already distracted, while Solay thinks the droids are just excited to see Batuu. Nubs says something in Poobian. Brightstar reminds his friends to stay focused while Solay tries to remind the three astromechs to focus on their mission.

The lost package

However, the six are distracted by a green-skinned alien vendor who demonstrates juggling balls. The alien allows Brightstar to practise juggling balls, causing him to put down the blue package he intends to deliver to Master Drow near a trash can. A trash collector droid arrives in a trash hauler to empty the trash can. He accidentally picks up the blue package that Brightstar was carrying. After returning the balls to the vendor, Brightstar and the others discover that the package is missing.

Solay deduces that someone must have mistaken it for trash, while Brightstar says this is why they need to stay focused on the mission. He decides they should find the trash collector to retrieve the package. Solay suggests they split up to cover more ground. The group splits into three pairs. Dozer and Nubs reach a trash bin. While waiting for a trash collector, Dozer is distracted by a floating pink flower, which he and Dozer chase. Due to their distraction, the two of them miss the trash collector droid emptying the bin. They spot the package in the trash hauler just as it leaves—the two run after the vehicle.

A frantic Nubs contacts Solay via comlink, saying they were distracted and missed the trash hauler. Solay says that she and Gigi will keep an eye out for the trash hauler and take positions on opposite sides of a bridge connecting two buildings. Gigi detaches her drone but gets distracted by a four-winged kroa bird. Solay also spots the bird and is excited because they can only be found on Batuu. While the two are distracted, the trash hauler passes under the bridge. Solay sighs while Gigi sulks. Solay reassures Gigi that they can still count on Brightstar and Beepers.

Meanwhile, Brightstar and Beepers take an interest in a rare white and blue starship from Variax. Solay contacts Brightstar and warns him that the trash hauler is coming their way. The two spot the trash hauler passing through the street below and follow it on foot, bumping into a loader droid. Nubs and Dozer bump into Brighstar and Beepers, causing Dozer to hit the vehicle.

The kindly trash collector droid

The concerned trash collector droid exits the trash hauler and checks on Dozer, who is unharmed. Brightstar and Solay explain that he may have accidentally picked up a package in his trash hauler. The trash collector droid recalls encountering such a package but says it may already have been sent to the dump. He explains that everything that goes into the dump gets recycled. He apologizes, but Brightstar apologizes for not taking care of the package. Dozer apologizes on behalf of his droid friends. Nubs says they got distracted, and Solay says that they got excited about visiting Batuu.

The trash collector droid says that Batuu is a beautiful place. Brightstar asks the droid to take them to the dump so they can search for the package and deliver it to Master Drow. The other Jedi younglings and droids agree. The kindly trash-collector droid takes them to the rubbish dump, where they see a magnetic crane sifting through metal objects, which are then crushed and compressed by other machinery. A claw stacks the trash cubes into piles.

Junkyard adventure

Working together, the younglings and droids resume their search for the package. Gigi spots the package but is unable to stop it from being caught by the magnetic crane, which lifts the object onto the conveyor belt towards the smasher. Beeper offers to fly Brightstar to the conveyor belt. While flying, Beeper is caught by the magnet, while Brightstar lands on the conveyor belt system. Solay gets Nubs and Dozer to clear a path to the control panel by moving crates. They reach the panel where Nubs tosses an object.

Solay fiddles with the controls, causing the magnet to spin. She presses another button, which causes the mechanical claw to wave. Solay spots a computer board and convinces Gigi to connect to it to switch off the magnet. Brightstar runs on the conveyor belt after Beepers. Solay tasks him with retrieving the package, while Dozer is tasked with reversing the conveyor belt before the passage gets to the smasher. He activates the wrong conveyor belt.

Brightstar reaches the package just as it approaches the smashing machine. Gigi manages to deactivate the magnet, allowing Beeper to race towards Brightstar. While the others watch tensely, Brightstar rides on Beeper and manages to retrieve the package just seconds before the smashing machine crushes it. Brightstar and Beeper circle before landing near the others, who congratulate them. Brightstar remarks that Black Spire Outpost is exciting while Beeper whistles.

Better late than never

Later that evening, Master Drow waits beside a stall while munching on a sausage roll. He is relieved to see the younglings with the package. Solay hands him the package, while Brightstar apologizes for getting distracted and for the package accidentally getting lost. Drow is pleased the younglings succeeded with their mission and learnt a valuable lesson along the way.

Nubs is curious about the package, and Drow reveals that it is a plant nestled inside a glass ball. He explains that it is a Tenoo tree sprout that Master Zia Zaldor Zanna wanted to give him as an experiment. Drow explains that they are growing all sorts of plants from across the galaxy on Batuu. As Master Drow heads back to the Batuu Jedi temple, the younglings take the droids on a tour of Black Spire Outpost. Solay and Brightstar decide to show them the town’s spires while recounting their adventure with Ozon Nimbee.
