Story
Jedi Master Dooku and his Padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn, arrive at a planet in a T-6 shuttle. They land outside a dilapidated village, with its residents slamming doors and closing windows at their arrival, unfriendly towards outsiders. Eventually, the two find a cantina and enter. Dooku has a question for those inside: where is the Senator’s son?
An older woman offers to speak. The son of Dagonet, the planet’s representative in the Galactic Senate, has been kidnapped, and the Jedi have been sent to rescue him. Dooku quickly realizes, however, that all of the villagers appear to be complicit in the abduction. The village elder admits to the crime, pointing out that Dagonet’s long service to the Republic has done everything to enrich him at the expense of his people.
She takes Dooku and Qui-Gon to the barn where the son is being held. He says he’s been treated well, and sympathizes with the plight of the people, saying he didn’t know anything beforehand as he was usually on Coruscant or in the planet’s capital. The discussion is interrupted by word that Dagonet has come in person, with soldiers. The elder accuses the Jedi of tricking her, but Dooku says that they came without the Senator’s knowledge.
The villagers arm themselves, and they leave the barn with the Jedi. Dooku attempts to get Dagonet to stand down, noting that his people are angry with him for good reason. The Senator refuses, and a firefight breaks out. The Jedi defend the villagers, but several are still struck down. As the deaths mount, Dooku takes a rash action and Force chokes the Senator, throwing Qui-Gon away with the Force when he tries to stop him. Qui-Gon goes back into the barn and frees Dagonet’s son from his binders, telling him to go out there and save his father.
The son’s intervention leads Dooku to release the Senator, as the son expresses disappointment in his father. Dooku tells Qui-Gon that he acted wiser than his master on that day, and that he will be a great Jedi. At the village, as father and son prepare to leave, Dagonet’s son solemnly promises the village elder that he will help her people.
