Background: Jaro Tapal was assigned to Jedi Master Yaddle as her Padawan before the Clone Wars and later became a Jedi Master himself. During the final years of the Galactic Republic, Jedi Master Jaro Tapal served in the Grand Army of the Republic—holding the military rank of Jedi General—as commanding officer of the 13th Battalion. After the Clone Wars began, Tapal briefly spoke to Anakin Skywalker at the youngling Cal Kestis’ Knighting Ceremony, where news of a bombing on Cato Neimoidia was also shared. In addition to his military responsibilities, During their absence from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Tapal took the opportunity to continue Kestis’ training, who had already become his Padawan. At one point, Tapal became friends with Jedi Knight Cere Junda, who considered him a true guardian of the Republic.

Tapal and Kestis fought together in the Clone Wars until a specific time. One day, during the Bracca Invasion, they went to Mygeeto to help Ki-Adi-Mundi and the 21st Nova Corps aboard the Albedo Brave when Order 66 was given. This order declared that all Jedi were enemies of the state and was communicated by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious to the clone troopers. However, Tapal sensed something was wrong and saved himself and his apprentice by killing the Clone Commander with him. After realizing that all of the other clones had also turned against them, Tapal decided that they needed to evacuate their Venator-class Star Destroyer along with Kestis.

Tapal devised an escape plan and decided to split up from his apprentice during their journey to the escape pods. He advised Kestis to use the maintenance halls to avoid the clone troopers while he confronted his former soldiers. He fought and defeated multiple squads and even saved his Padawan from being shot by two troopers in the turbolift shaft. Tapal sabotaged the Star Destroyer’s reactor to ensure their escape just before the Albedo Brave was destroyed.

Tapal and Kestis both arrived at the escape pod bay at the same time. However, the remaining clones managed to overpower and fatally wound General Tapal. Despite this, Tapal saved his apprentice’s life before they escaped in one of the pods. Before leaving, Tapal gave his damaged lightsaber to Kestis, who had lost it during their escape. He instructed Kestis to wait for a signal from the Jedi High Council, although he was unaware that it was almost defunct. Tapal also advised Kestis to trust only in the Force. As Kestis returned to Bracca, the reactor of the Albedo Brave exploded, destroying the vessel.

Tapal was remembered as a hero years after his death, despite Kestis being traumatized by Order 66 and haunted by his slain Master’s memory.

After 14 BBY, the Jedi Order and the Republic that Tapal had served were overthrown by the Sith, who established the Galactic Empire. To survive the Great Jedi Purge, Kestis conceals his true identity and retains his Master’s lightsaber. Thanks to his new mentor, Cere Junda, Kestis overcame his self-imposed exile in Bracca and embarked on a secret mission to restore the Jedi Order.

As Kestis embarked on his journey, he began to recall his days as Tapal’s student, and those memories helped him to rekindle his connection to the Force and remember various techniques. During his mission on Dathomir, Tapal’s apparition appeared and called Kestis a weak and failed apprentice. However, after crafting a new lightsaber on Ilum, Kestis confronted his fears in the form of his deceased Master and finally let go of the tragedy of his past. He also promised never to forget Jaro Tapal and to honor his teachings as he moved forward to create his destiny.
