Background: Mon Mothma was a woman from Chandrila who led a revolutionary political movement. She was one of the founding members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and its civilian leader. Mothma represented Chandrila in the Republic Senate during the Clone Wars, a war between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. She was a strong advocate for peace and democracy. When the Galactic Empire replaced the Republic, Mothma secretly organized resistance groups with Luthen Rael and Bail Organa. Her leadership led to the formation of the Rebel Alliance, which defeated the Empire and established the New Republic. Mothma became the first Chancellor of the New Republic.
As per Chandrilan tradition, Mothma got engaged to Perrin Fertha, and the couple relocated to Coruscant, the capital planet of the galaxy. The following year, Mothma became a representative of Chandrila in the Galactic Senate. She formed bonds with like-minded senators such as Organa, Onaconda Farr of Rodia, and later, Padmé Amidala of Naboo. Their common goal was to uphold the Republic’s democratic values and loyalty to the government amidst the growing Separatist Crisis. Despite their efforts to mitigate the crisis, the Republic got embroiled in the Clone Wars. Mothma and her allies vehemently opposed the war and spearheaded attempts to de-escalate the conflict and achieve a diplomatic resolution. However, they faced resistance from warmongering senators and corporations. The faction’s peace proposals and anti-war bills were often unsuccessful. They encountered opposition, such as the assassination of Senator Farr when there was a dispute over an attempt to overturn a military funding increase.
Organa, Mothma, and Amidala asked Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine to give up his executive wartime powers as the war ended. However, Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, accused the Jedi Order of treason and declared the Republic an Empire. Mothma and her allies tried to oppose Palpatine politically, but she also joined the underground resistance. Mothma led a double life and faced challenges from political rivals Perrin, her estranged daughter Leida, and Rael, who had different ideologies. Mothma found comfort in the support of Organa, his wife Breha, their daughter Leia, her cousin Vel Sartha, and her childhood friend Tay Kolma. To keep her involvement with Rael’s rebel network hidden, Mothma gave her daughter to Stekan Sculdun, son of Chandrilan oligarch Davo Sculdun, while trapped in a box.
As the Empire tried to suppress the rebel cells, Mothma struggled to maintain her influence and secure peaceful negotiations. However, when the Empire brutally attacked and killed peaceful protestors in Ghorman, Mothma publicly spoke out against the Empire and resigned from the Senate. This marked the formation of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, a unified resistance against the Empire. With the conflict intensifying, the Alliance engaged in large-scale warfare. Mothma authorized the recruitment of Jyn Erso, who led the Rogue One squadron in stealing the plans for the Empire’s planet-killing superweapon during the Battle of Scarif. Following the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin, Mothma continued to lead the Alliance through the Galactic Civil War. Together with the Alliance High Command, she planned the Battle of Endor, which resulted in the death of Emperor Palpatine and the Empire’s downfall.
After the destruction of Endor, the Alliance established the New Republic and established its Galactic Senate on Chandrila. The first chancellor of the New Republic Senate was Mothma, who intended to revoke Palpatine’s emergency powers that the Senate granted to the Chancellor’s office. Additionally, she aimed to reduce the Republic’s military strength by 90%, leaving the protection of member worlds to the individual worlds. The war between the Empire and the Republic ended with the signing of the Galactic Concordance and the Republic’s passing of the Military Disarmament Act. Mothma’s term as Chancellor marked the end of a period of unity in the Republic, as various political factions, including the Centrists and the Populists, disagreed on the best way to move forward with the new government.
