Background: When Ezra Bridger of the Lothal rebels infiltrated the Academy under the fake name “Dev Morgan,” he and Jai were put in the same cadet squad. The pair developed a friendly rivalry, with Ezra coming first and Jai second in every training session. Their friendship was tested, however, when Ezra turned on Jai and sabotaged him during one lesson, causing Jai to lose one of the top three spots that gave him extra privileges. While Jai saw this as competitive backstabbing, Ezra did it so that his ally, Zare Leonis, would get the spot and be able to help him in his mission for the rebels.

After securing the Imperial decoder that he had been sent to collect, Ezra overheard the school’s director contact the Inquisitor, informing him that both Jai Kell and “Dev Morgan” did well enough in their lessons to indicate that they were likely Force-sensitive; the Inquisitor planned to come by the next day to collect them. Ezra and Zare alerted Jai and convinced him to flee. Jai was both skeptical and reluctant at first but eventually agreed after Zare told him how his sister, Dhara, was likely taken away by the Inquisitor and had not been seen since.

The next day, those who received the best results in their training session were allowed to apprentice aboard an All Terrain Defense Pod; Jai and Zare received the spots and hijacked it, allowing Jai and Ezra to escape. Zare stayed behind to look for more information about his sister, pretending he had tried to stop the others.

The rebels agreed to help Jai and his mother hide from the Empire, though Jai seemed bitter and pessimistic about their chances of succeeding.

At some point within the following four years, Jai became a member of the Lothal resistance group, which the previous governor, Ryder Azadi, headed. During this period, the Empire commenced constructing and enhancing TIE/d “Defender” Multi-Role Starfighters on Lothal, with oversight from Grand Admiral Thrawn. A more advanced version of the Defender fighter, the Elite, was created. However, Lothal was under strict lockdown at that time. Despite this, Ryder managed to send a message to the Alliance High Command on Yavin 4 about the new fighter. Unfortunately, during an Imperial raid, Jho, a member of the Lothal resistance, was captured and executed shortly after. Ryder then instructed Jai to wait for the Spectres at the Pit Stop, formerly owned by Jho. Disguised as ordinary civilians, Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren entered the now-imperial-owned cantina where Jai was already present.

When Bridger mentioned to Baron Valen Rudor, the new cantina owner, that he used to frequent the place when Jho owned it, he realized who they were. But when Bridger and Sabine tried to leave and were almost caught by stormtroopers, Jai intervened and referred to Bridger as “Oleg” to let him know his true identity. Bridger hadn’t seen Jai in years and didn’t recognize him at first. Jai then led the rebels to an entrance to the town’s sewers, which Jho had maintained as an escape route. Despite being pursued by stormtroopers, the rebels managed to find their way to the correct exit and were met by Ryder, who helped them escape in his U-wing.

After stealing the prototype TIE Defender Elite, Bridger and Sabine went missing, and Jai joined the search party to find them. Later, Jai, Bridger, and Zeb were tasked with retrieving the hyperdrive of the Defender Elite, hidden in the rocks near the crash site. Disguised as scout troopers, Jai and Bridger were keeping watch when Thrawn’s assassin, Rukh, arrived in the area. Rukh immediately sensed the presence of Zeb and set off to hunt down the Rebels. Jai was on watch and alerted Bridger and Zeb to Rukh’s approach. While Zeb dealt with the hyperdrive, Bridger tried to distract Rukh.

Bridger and Jai tried to convince Rukh, a skilled Noghri, that they were authentic scout troopers who had just finished scouring the surrounding area. However, Rukh’s powerful sense of smell prevented him from believing them, leading to a physical altercation. Bridger unconsciously revealed his Jedi identity during the scuffle when he utilized the Force to hurl Rukh off Jai. The two managed to flee on a speeder bike as Rukh and two other scout troopers pursued them. Meanwhile, Zeb, who had successfully evaded the Imperial forces, stole a troop transport to flee and reunite with the Rebel base. Jai and Bridger navigated through a labyrinth of rock spires with Rukh and the scout troopers hot on their heels.

Rukh secretly attached a homing beacon to Jai and Bridger’s bike during the chase. This allowed him to report the location of the Rebel camp to Governor Arihnda Pryce after the pair escaped. Sabine had just installed the hyperdrive on Ryder’s U-wing when the Imperials attacked the camp. Hera and Chopper quickly fled Lothal with the Elite’s flight data recorder. Meanwhile, Jai fled in a landspeeder, carrying crates and promising to contact the others later.

Jai was at the Lothal rebels’ newly established base in the southern hemisphere. After getting approval from Alliance High Command to attack the planet’s Imperial Armory Complex, Jai helped Ryder and the Spectres plant explosives on turrets, which were installed as anti-air defenses to protect the factory complex. Unfortunately, Jai and the group witnessed the Rebel fighters being shot down by a second wave of Imperial fighters over Lothal City. As a result, the Rebels had to retreat to their base.

Jai, Ryder, and Mart Mattin witnessed Hera’s unsuccessful air strike and subsequent capture. Meanwhile, the Spectres – Bridger, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper – worked on assembling three Loth-bat gliders to rescue Hera Syndulla. Although they managed to save Hera, Kanan lost his life when Governor Arihnda Pryce attacked the Lothal City fuel depot. Later, Jai, Ryder, and Mart listened to Alton Kastle’s propaganda broadcast, claiming that the rebel cause on Lothal was defeated. However, the Spectres later discovered that Kanan’s sacrifice had not been in vain and that the explosion had caused significant damage to Thrawn’s TIE Defender factory.

Jai Kell joined Bridger and Ryder Azadi’s plot to trap Governor Pryce at the Lothal cliff dwelling as the first move in their bid to free Lothal from Imperial control. In line with the plan, Ryder acted as if he had turned against the rebels and gave away their location to Governor Pryce to avoid imprisonment.

Jai and Mart Mattin noticed movement outside the camp before it was attacked by Governor Pryce and her Imperial troops, including patrol transports, jump troopers, and stormtroopers. The rebels were eventually trapped on top of the Mining Guild ore crawler but were saved by reinforcements led by Hera and a pack of loth-wolves. The Imperials were defeated, and Pryce was captured. Later, Bridger and a team of rebels destroyed the Imperial Complex, freeing Lothal. However, Bridger called upon purrgil to rescue his comrades to defeat the Imperial blockade and take him, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the Chimaera’s crew into hyperspace.
