Background: Beru Whitesun dreamt of opening a café or restaurant on her own in Anchorhead since her youth. Her passion for cooking started during her school years when she took a cooking class. The teacher was impressed by her blue-milk cheese, which he proclaimed was the best he had ever tasted. His words inspired Beru to pursue her dream, as he suggested that she was born to make blue-milk cheese.
While on a supply run in Mos Espa, Whitesun made a stop at Watto’s junk shop to have her portable navigation device fixed. It was there that she met Shmi Skywalker, a slave owned by Watto who offered to repair the device for a reasonable price. Not long after, Whitesun introduced Shmi to Cliegg Lars, a local moisture farmer, who eventually freed and married Skywalker.
With Whitesun’s help, Skywalker was able to locate and deactivate the chips that had been implanted in the minds of formerly enslaved people, including her own. As time passed, Whitesun grew close to Owen Lars, Cliegg’s son, and the two began dating.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Shmi Skywalker Lars, Owen’s stepmother, was abducted by Tusken Raiders. This event brought Anakin Skywalker, Shmi’s son, and Senator Padmé Amidala to the Lars moisture farm, where Cliegg received them. Skywalker arrived too late to save his mother, who passed away in his arms, prompting him to slaughter the Tuskens. When he returned, a funeral was held at the farm.
During the funeral, Whitesun served blue milk and cheese to everyone. Whitesun continued to support others on Tatooine, working to free enslaved people. She fed and comforted newly freed people and their families.
Three years later, Whitesun had already married Owen and taken on his last name. Both alone after Cliegg’s death, Owen and Beru decided to have a child. Still, problems of infertility precluded them from having one, leading them to consider seeing one of the fertility droids at Mos Eisley. When the galactic conflict came to a close, Beru and Owen became the guardians of their new nephew, Luke Skywalker, after his father turned to the dark side of the Force and became Darth Vader, and his mother died in childbirth. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi Master, and friend of Anakin, delivered infant Luke to the Lars homestead. After receiving Luke, Beru told Owen they would raise his stepbrother’s son as their own.
For the next nineteen years, Lars and her husband raised Skywalker as if he were their son. Lars often defended Skywalker’s interests against Owen, who was overprotective of him due to fear that he would follow in Anakin’s footsteps and try to become a Jedi Knight. In 9 BBY, Luke and Owen carried out work at the homestead while being watched from a distance by Kenobi. Kenobi left some spare parts for a T-16 skyhopper toy for Luke. As they worked, Luke ran away from the labor, climbed on top of the homestead, and pretended to be pod-racing while Owen and Beru looked for him. Upon seeing Luke, Beru laughed while Owen expressed his disappointment.
Shortly after, while rescuing Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, who was also Luke’s twin sister, Kenobi incurred the wrath of the former Inquisitor Reva Sevander, who now wanted to kill Luke. Upon learning this, Owen informed Beru, and she inquired how Sevander had found out where they lived. Owen confessed that he did not know and added that Kenobi had left. Owen suggested they leave the homestead, but Beru refused to abandon her home. She argued that they could handle the situation on their own. Beru then retrieved two blaster rifles from the homestead, threw one to Owen, and both of them positioned themselves for Sevander’s attack.
That night, Owen lied to Luke, saying that Tusken raiders were on the hunt along the Jundland Wastes. He instructed Luke to run if anything happened. After that, Beru hugged Luke and told him everything would be all right, holding back tears. Then, Owen and Beru left Luke to prepare for Sevander’s impending arrival. When Sevander arrived, Owen and Beru started shooting at her, but she dodged the shots with her lightsaber. Owen faced Sevander alone, but when she knocked him down, he called his wife, telling her that Sevander was on her way to her. Beru managed to distract Sevander long enough for Luke to escape the homestead, but Sevander quickly knocked her down. With Sevander gone, Owen and Beru exited the homestead and called for Luke. At that moment, Kenobi returned from his confrontation with Darth Vader and landed by the homestead. Beru informed Kenobi about what had happened, and he went to look in the Dune Sea. Beru, who saw Sevander crying and carrying Luke back to the homestead, called Kenobi back. While Kenobi consoled Sevander, Owen and Beru carried Luke back home.
A year after a severe drought, Owen was taken captive by the Wookiee bounty hunter Krrsantan over unpaid water taxes owed to the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure. Lars went after his brother-in-law, armed with a rifle, and instructed young Skywalker to stay safe within the homestead.
In 2 BBY, following a brief confrontation with Maul, the former Sith apprentice, Kenobi, visited the Lars moisture farm but kept his distance. He heard Lars calling out to his nephew, seventeen-year-old Luke, from inside the homestead. Kenobi also saw Skywalker running back towards the house against a binary sunset.
Skywalker, now nineteen years old, had never left Tatooine and wanted to explore the wider galaxy. Despite Owen’s objections, Lars convinced him to let Skywalker go after one more season at home. This decision was made after the theft of the Death Star plans and Darth Vader’s capture of Princess Leia Organa over Tatooine.
Around this time, Skywalker and Owen bought two droids from a Jawa Sandcrawler that stopped by their homestead. The droids they acquired were C-3PO, a protocol droid, and R2-D2, an astromech droid. The Empire was on the hunt for these two droids. Skywalker cleaned the newly purchased droids in the garage, where he discovered a message from Organa that was intended for Kenobi. During dinner, Skywalker informed his aunt and uncle about the message, which led to a discussion about the connection between Kenobi and Skywalker’s father. Owen suggested that Skywalker should stay on the farm for another season, but Lars disagreed with him. Lars saw similarities between Skywalker and his father, which Owen did not appreciate. After dinner, while Skywalker was in the garage, R2-D2 vanished from the homestead. The following day, Owen realized that Skywalker had not returned with the two droids, and he grew concerned. Owen inquired with his wife, who informed him that Skywalker had left early to complete some errands and had taken the two droids. Meanwhile, Imperial stormtroopers, searching for the stolen Death Star plans located in R2-D2’s memory banks, were led to the Lars homestead by Owen’s purchase of the droids from the Jawas. The stormtroopers killed Beru and Owen and destroyed their home.
