Background: Barion Raner was a human male who served as a Rebel pilot during the Galactic Civil War. He went by the callsign Blue Four and acted as the second-in-command of Blue Squadron.

During the Battle of Scarif, Raner fought alongside General Antoc Merrick and other Blue Squadron members to support the rebels on Scarif’s surface. While most of the squadron made it through the defenses into the atmosphere, Raner was cut off from the rest of the group when the Empire reactivated its orbital gate. This resulted in the deaths of two of his fellow pilots, including Vangos Grek. In a last-second maneuver, Raner survived and continued to support the fight with two other members of Blue Squadron who had also been cut off.

Raner fired the initial shots, ultimately leading to the Alliance’s victory. While pursued by TIE fighters, he destroyed the shield generator of the Star Destroyer Persecutor, which enabled Jon Vander and his pilots to launch a barrage of ion torpedoes that disabled the vessel. The damaged warship was later rammed by the Lightmaker and used to destroy the Scarif Shield Gate and the Intimidator. This secured the Death Star plans and a hard-fought victory for the Rebel Alliance.

Raner wrote a combat basics manual on flying T-65 X-wing starfighters that new Rebel pilots used. It included a section that outlined several maneuvers for starfighter combat, including the Split S, which was used to disengage from a fight. The manual was later intentionally leaked on the HoloNet by Alliance Intelligence.
